This particular chair was around 60 years old,
completely dried out which was the primary cause of the straps breaking.
We did a slight respray with a leather friendly spray paint which
dries flexible and not brittle. After that we saturated the leather
with a liquid conditioner which soaked to the base of the leather
and then we applied a thick leather paste which helped to smooth
out the surface texture which had started to crackle. After 3 weeks
of oiling most of the colour returned and the flexibility increased
substantially. We also remade new straps from Italian belting leather
which was strikingly similar to the original material. The cost
to restore the leather was $450 and the straps cost $200 per strap.
